Martha Lubbers
A native of West Michigan, Martha Lubbers is a self-taught painter and photographer whose work is a meditation on light and presence, on the beauty of her surroundings. Her paintings and her poetry emerge from those moments in time when you notice the holiness and wonder of the natural world - in the minutiae of a blade of grass or the grand expanse of a sunset over the water.
Martha primarily paints in oils, which possess a unique ability to reflect and hold light differently than other mediums. She finds that painting abstracts allows for more emotional release and exploration, while the landscapes she is drawn to paint and photograph, are all about shadow and light. In all of her work, whether abstract or realist, Martha attempts to honor and preserve the subtle impressions left by ephemeral moments and to distill down to the internal truth of that time.
Believing that everything is sacred, she listens to the spirit of a place. Each piece invites the viewer to pause, to see, and perhaps to feel a similar reflection within themselves.
